In 1955 a small group of horsemen and horsewomen led by Mr. Al Nichols, now deceased, sat together to plan a club
dedicated to providing activities for lovers of western horses. By 1956 the organization named the MARYLAND WESTERN
HORSE ASSOCIATION took form and the next 50 years is just the "rest of the story". Initial members included
not only Al, but Helen and Bob Spedden and Ellen Schultz, who is the only remaining active member from that group. Way
to go Ellen!!
This organization began primarily as a horseshow club but also sponsored trips, trail rides, cook outs,
and other social events appealing to the horsey crowd. It has survived lots of changes in all those years, but thanks
to lots of dedicated members too numerous to name, it continues to be a vibrant club.
Our 50th
ANNIVERSARY GALA was held on Saturday, September 24, 2005 and was a HUGE
success! Thanks to those of you who were able to attend and make it a great party.
